GOLDEN, MS – Vernell Johnson, 82, went home to be with the Lord August 5, 2023 at North Mississippi Medical Center.  She was born September 28, 1940 in the Banner Community of Itawamba County.  She was the youngest of twelve children born to J. Frank and Ida Reeves Mink. She married Tulon Johnson on April 30, 1958.  She worked as a seamstress at various local businesses.  Two of her greatest joys in life were being a grandmother and gardening.  She was a member of Grace Community Fellowship in Golden.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, August 11, 1 p.m. at Grace Community Fellowship with Pastor Tony Darracott and Bro. Grant McKinney officiating. Burial will be in Old Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Golden, MS. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by a son – Michael (Joyce) Johnson of Golden; daughter – Glenda (Joe) Darracott of Red Bay, AL; grandchildren – Pam (Ashley) Wallace of Golden, Tony (Heather) Darracott of Red Bay, Chris (Jeanine) Darracott of Florence, AL, Heather (Duston) Mills of Red Bay, Bella and Gracie Johnson of Baldwyn, MS and Grant (Sarah) McKinney of Golden; great-grandchildren- Bryson and Andrew Wallace, Samuel and Addison Darracott, Neriah Darracott and Marlie and Xander Mills.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, her husband, her son, Terry and her daughter-in-law, Teresa. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Samuel Darracott, Bryson, Andrew and Ashley Wallace, Duston and Xander Mills, Chris Darracott and Terry Ray.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, August 10, from 6-8 p.m. at Grace Community Fellowship, 74 Red Bay Road, Golden, MS. 

The family would like to thank the local first responders, Red Bay Hospital, The Meadows of Fulton, North Mississippi Ambulance Services, and North Mississippi Medical Center.
