RED BAY | Khalil Luster is only a sophomore, but the accolades have come early – and in historic fashion.
The Red Bay High School student was recently named Alabama’s 2026 Class 2A Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball for Class 2A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, becoming the first player in school history to earn the prestigious Mr. Basketball distinction. Yet for Luster, the recognition is less of a finish line and more of a starting point.
“It’s good, and I’m thankful for the award,” Luster said. “But I want more than that. I know I can get way more than that.”
That mindset has been a defining trait for the rising standout, whose success this season was built not only on natural ability but on relentless work. Luster credits his teammates, family and an intense daily routine for helping him reach this level.
“I come in the gym every day,” he said. “Sometimes two or three times a day.”
Whether it’s early-morning workouts or sessions after school followed by another trip back to the gym later in the evening, Luster’s commitment to improvement has set him apart. That work translated into an impressive statistical season, averaging more than 21 points per game. Despite those numbers, Luster remains focused on team success, something he says the Tigers can build on after a season that ended short of their ultimate goal.
“We’ve got to play more as a team,” he said. “We should have won that game (the state semifinal round game against La Fayette). Just being together on and off the court, that’s what we need.”
Even as a sophomore, Luster stepped into a leadership role on the varsity squad, something he doesn’t take lightly.
“It means a lot that the coaches trust me,” he said.
Head coach John Torisky said that trust is well-earned.
“He leads by example,” Torisky said. “He’s the hardest worker I have, and there’s a maturity about him that other kids typically don’t have. The team feeds off him.”
While Luster’s quiet demeanor might not always stand out vocally, his play on the court speaks volumes. Still, Torisky believes the next step in Luster’s development will be becoming more vocal as a leader.
“As he progresses, that’s the next part for him,” Torisky said.
What makes Luster’s accomplishments even more impressive is the level of competition he faced. Red Bay regularly schedules opponents from larger classifications, and Luster’s production came against some of the toughest teams in the region.
“He’s putting up those numbers against 4A, 5A, 6A schools,” Torisky said. “That’s probably the most impressive thing.”
Torisky describes Luster as a “once-in-a-lifetime” player, not just because of his talent, but because of how he fits within a team-first system.
“For him to do what he does in an unselfish way, that’s what makes me happiest,” he said.
Off the court, Luster continues to develop his game through travel AAU basketball, competing with Pro One Basketball Club in events across the country, including recent tournaments in Kansas City and upcoming stops in Ohio and Georgia.
Looking ahead, his goals remain as ambitious as his work ethic.
“I want to win a championship,” Luster said. “And I want to be Mr. Basketball again – the overall Mr. Basketball for the state.”
